When you’re embarking on any course of action in your life – whether it’s finding a new job, advancing your career, asking for a raise, or starting a new venture – research has shown your chances of success increase with accountability.
How’s your game plan for 2016 going so far? Are you finding yourself getting frustrated by issues you didn’t – or couldn’t – foresee? Is your initial momentum starting to sputter out as you notice that you’re not making the kind of progress you wanted – or worse yet, backsliding?
Maybe it’s time to consider getting help in the form of having someone to whom you can be accountable, someone who can provide a firm but gentle push when you need it and offer a fresh perspective when your view has gone stale.
Let’s say, for example, that you’ve decided to improve your time management skills. You have created a list of things you want to get done in the next week, but find yourself stuck on one particular item – like that mess in your office which has had the snowball effect of keeping you from managing your finances efficiently and has created a bottleneck that is holding up everything else you need to do.
You feel your stress level mounting and you’re frustrated to the point of being tempted to say, “Forget it! Time management is overrated anyway.”
Now consider the same scenario with the added component of knowing that you have a coaching call scheduled for the next day when you know you’ll be able to get some support to help push you through whatever is holding you up. Do you think that might lower your stress a bit and help you remain productive?
An accountability partner can be anyone you choose as long as it is someone who is fully supportive of you, knowledgeable about the topic you need help with and can recognize when it’s time to be firm and confront you about doing what you said you wanted to do. Studies show that you’re more likely to keep moving forward when you know there’s someone cheering you on who might be disappointed if you give up.
If you’re in need of an accountability partner, I’m always just a phone call or email away!
