Your Strengths Are Tools, Too
Your Strengths Are Tools, Too
A big part of being successful lies in finding and using the right tools and resources for the job at hand.
One of my jobs as a career coach is to help people discover those resources, not only outside of themselves, but within themselves, too.
When you know what your strengths are, it's easier to access them and put them to good use in your life and in your career.
Sometimes You Can See the Destination, But Not the Path
Often, when people look at a situation, they can see the perfect outcome but can't necessarily see the path to get there.
For example, a massage therapist's ideal situation may be a full appointment book with a two-week waiting list.
He knows exactly what he wants.
The problem is that he can't figure out how to take his business from where it is now to that level.
This is a really common problem.
When you don't know which resources you should use to tackle a situation, or you don't know what resources are available to you, your goals can start to feel more like daydreams, floating away on the wind.
So, if you're not sure how to achieve your goals, start by looking at your strengths.
What Are You Already Good At?
How can you take the things you're good at and turn them into positives for your business or career?
Your best resources may be the things that come naturally to you because they're already there, waiting to be accessed.
For example, if you're tech-savvy, consider using that strength to create an email marketing campaign and raise awareness about your business.
If you're a people person, talk about your business at networking group meetings. You might even start your own group.
The point is to stop looking only for resources outside of yourself and take a good look at what you already have.
Not Sure What You're Good At?
You're not alone.
Many people take their strengths for granted. Sometimes we overlook what we're good at because we're too busy wishing we were good at something else.
If you're in that place, try this:
Make a list of everything you love to do, whether it's related to your business or not.
Then look for the common threads.
Are you adventurous?
Are you a risk-taker?
Are you detail-oriented, or do the little things tend to bog you down?
Do you express yourself better when speaking or when writing?
Do you enjoy solving problems?
Do people come to you when they need help?
Pay attention to those patterns.
When you know what your strong points are, you have an automatic starting point for problem-solving.
Look Inside Yourself
Sometimes the resource you're looking for isn't something you need to go out and find.
Sometimes it's something you already have.
Your strengths can become some of your most valuable tools when you learn how to recognize them and put them to work.
You can attain your goals when you learn to use the resources available to you wisely.
Just look inside yourself!
Make it a great one!
